Trying Some Oatmeal

Avery's 6 month appointment is coming up in less than 2 weeks so we know that solid foods are right around the corner. Since Avery has been sleeping so poorly, we thought it couldn't hurt to try some oatmeal prior to her appointment in hopes it might satiate her and result in a some longer sleep stretches and also get her experimenting with a spoon and solids. Hung was much more excited for this than me and Avery has started to show signs that she's ready by mimicking us chewing when we eat. But, I have loved breastfeeding more than I thought I could and I know that solids are the first step in starting to ween her so I have resisted it a bit. Plus, our pediatrician doesn't believe in starting solids until 6 months. In any case, we thought a little oatmeal couldn't hurt and Avery seemed to really like it!! She did a good job and didn't push the oatmeal out. She actually started reaching for the spoon at then end to put in her mouth. She got a little bored with it after about 10 minutes but it was a good first attempt. Unfortunately, it didn't help her sleep any longer but I think we'll keep giving her one feeding a day until we see the Doctor in a couple weeks.

  1. Awww- I remember the first time we gave Aya solids I actually had tears in my eyes. But you can still be a long way from weaning if you want! Aya nursed like a champ until she was 16 months! (it was actually only when we started her on cow's milk at 12 months that she started to nurse less)
