18 Month Update

Avery is 1 1/2 years old and becoming such a big girl.

Here are some fun, cute and new things in Month 18:
  • Mickey Mouse is still the "Man of the Hour" along with Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy and Pluto. She knows them all and can point them out and say their names. She sleeps with her Mickey and Minnie every night and is frequently playing with them and her other stuffed animals in her crib when we go in to get her in the morning. Avery also likes to watch the "Minnie's Bow-tique" clips that come on after MMC - She starts squealing "A TIQ" "A TIQ" when they come on.
  • Her new favorite phrase is Help Please which sounds like "Help peas" - I think she thinks it's one word and she knows it gets Hung or me to assist her.
  • I have been most amazed with all the language Avery is picking up - She's starting to say a lot of two syllable words and putting a couple words together. Her teachers are always telling us how impressed they are with all her talking at school and we hear TONS of it at home. I feel like there are new words every day!
  • She says "Yeah" and "No" all the time. Avery really understands what we are asking her and she is not afraid to tell us if she wants something or not. At night when we are rocking her we'll say "Do you want to go to bed now?" and we usually get a sleepy "Yeah". So sweet! We also hear lots of "Uh Oh" and "Oh No" -The other night I heard her going "Oh No" over and over again in her crib. I went in and discovered she couldn't find her Paci - quite the emergency!
  • Avery is very into eye glasses - She loves to wear her sunglasses and our sunglasses and likes us to try on hers, as well. And likes it when we are wearing our glasses at night or in the morning - always points them out. Along with Hung's Keurig every morning which she points to and say "Cof Tee".
  • We are working on colors - but right now if you ask her what color something is the answer is always "blue".
  • I have loved how Avery has started to associate things with the people she knows and loves. For example, Hung likes to watch lots of Golf on TV (I know, SO boring. But he loves it). When my mom and I were out with Avery we saw some Golf on TV in a store and Avery pointed at the TV and said "DaDa". Loved it.
  • She still likes books but I feel like we speed read now - she just keeps turning pages and has less of an attention span for us to actually read the words. Avery loves this new Baa Baa book that G got her for Valentine's Day. Each page a baby is looking for an animal and behind the flaps there are objects and only one flap has the animal in question. She likes to say "No" for each flap that is wrong and then show you the right flap with the animal.
  • Favorite toys are her baby dolls and stuffed animals and all her pretend food and kitchen stuff. She likes her doctor kit lately, too. She likes to examine her stuffed animals and me and Hung - her favorites are checking our ears and eyes, giving us shots, and using the scissors (sometimes not so nicely on her stuffed bear).
  • Avery is into having everyone in the room do the same thing - So if Avery has me try on her sunglasses, then Hung has to do it and my mom has to do it (along with anyone else that is present).
  • Avery also likes to get in the bath tub in our bathroom (fully clothed, no water) and just hang out. And many times she likes us to get in with her. Very random.
  • She also loves to play hide and seek and peek-a-boo with Dad.
  • She continues to have a great appetite and will eat almost anything - We only have issues when she's distracted by something or sick.
  • Avery has a little statue in her room of a Mom, Dad and baby. She likes to hold it before bed or while she is getting her diaper changed and point at each figure and say "MaMa", "DaDa" and "Avee" (which is what she calls herself). It was so sweet - I literally was choked up the first time she did it.
  • She is getting better about keeping her hair up and off her face - but it still gets pulled out quite often. I will love it when her bangs finally grow out but I think we have a ways until that happens.
  • Avery still loves her Paci and would use it all day if we let her. We try to keep it to just bed and nap but there are tantrums and times we are not as strict as we should be - we're working on it. Apparently at daycare she never asks for it during the day and rarely at nap time - I think we are being scammed at home!
  • She always tells us to "cut" all the food we put in front of her - and will keep asking until we cut things up smaller -even if they are already bite sized. Avery also thinks all of her food is too "hot" even if it's only a little warm. She'll tell us "hot" and blow on it.
  • She is in mostly 24 mos and 2T clothes and size 6 shoes. Avery is shaped just like her mama - all her pants are too long and she needs longer shirts since all her height is in her torso.
Happy 18 Month Birthday Sweet Girl! Love you more than anything.

Our photo shoot was a challenge this month. We tried last night to get pictures and all she would do was kiss her sign. So we tried again in the morning...She was very wiggly and active. And was also trying to roll around on the ground (she had just watched herself rolling as a baby and was trying to copy the video). Not great shots - but captures her energy at age 18 months!

A Visit from Chicago Friends with a Little ER Thrown In

We were so excited for our friends Drew and Katina to visit from Chicago this weekend. Avery has seemed totally normal on Friday and we were ready for a fun weekend. They brought Avery some very cute clothes and Avery had fun reading books with Katina - not sure how much she liked sitting with Drew, though. Hung and I noticed that she was congested during the day and wheezing a bit - just not totally herself. But we knew she was in good hands with her "G" and we went out for an adult dinner to Le Petit Chou. We had a great time at dinner - lots of reminiscing and laughing. But the evening was interrupted when my mom let me know that Avery was waking every 20 minutes and "barking like a dog" and also very short of breath - My mom literally thought there was a dog in the yard barking and then realized it was poor Avery on the monitor. Uncle Cullen and I went home to check on her and call the pediatrician - who said it sounded like she had Croup and if she was short of breath we should go to the ER so that they could help her breath easier.

We decided it was best to have Hung stay back and hang with his college friends who we haven't seen in forever. And my mom and I took Avery to the ER. Apparently, cold air is one of the ways to calm Croup so when we arrived she was acting a ton better (see the first hospital pic). She was laughing and being silly and we thought maybe we had made a mistake bringing her. But the nurse who checked us in says that happens to everyone who brings in babies with Croup and she'd be doing her Croupy cough soon enough - and she was right. Avery was totally obsessed with her hospital bracelet and loved that I had one, too. She was sad that G and her monkey didn't have one, though. All day today she kept saying "Oh No" and looking for the bracelet - I should have kept it last night! Unfortunately, the ER was very busy and we didn't get home until after 1:30 am but it was very good we went. They examined her in her little hospital gown, took some chest x-rays (she did great with x-rays and held her arms and stayed still with my assistance), and gave her a steroid treatment that will last for 3 days. We had an amazing nurse who gave us lots of good tips to help her heal and keep her comfortable the next few days and also gave Avery a Popsicle to soothe her throat which she loved!

It was a rough night of sleep for everyone. We didn't get to bed until 2 and Avery was up about 3 times coughing and crying and then was up for good at 7. Luckily, we all got some naps on Sunday and Avery was feeling much better thanks to the Steroid treatment. She was in a good mood most of the day (a little fussy and clingy, decreased appetite, and still a raspy voice and a hitch in her breath and cough). We took her outside for a walk and a drive with the windows down before bed since the cool air really seems to help. And she got another Popsicle which she really enjoyed. She was a little stir crazy by the end of the night and got all of her toys out but we were happy to see her playing and acting more like herself. Apparently, Croup usually gets worse/better/worse/better for a few days before it goes away but she has not had a fever or any of the really bad coughing today so hopefully we are through the worst of it. We will cross our fingers for a peaceful and sleep filled night. Very glad we survived our first ER and hope that the 2nd one is a LONG ways off.

Valentines Day - 2013

Avery had a great 2nd Valentines Day and got lots of love and presents from friends and family:
  • A giant Minnie Mouse from Mom and Dad
  • A kitty card from Grandma T and Grandpa
  • A giant stuffed bear (which Avery likes to perform medical exams on), a new board book, Minnie and Mickey Bubbles, and a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Card from G ("G" has become her official name for my mom) and Gramps
  • A Minnie t-shirt, Minnie purse and Minnie doll from Aunt Maddie (do you see a theme here?)
  • Lots of cards and treats from her friends at school
Avery gave all of her friends pretzels at school and also had some chocolates and gift cards for all her teachers.

She is one lucky and very loved little girl!

Loving Minnie

We were in Target last weekend and Avery was exploring the toy aisle with Hung. She came across a Minnie that she couldn't let go. She walked this thing around the entire store (and it's the same size as her!) and wouldn't put it down or let any of us hold it. So she got an early Valentine's Gift from us. She loves to carry Minnie around the house and also likes to take her by the kitchen table and then bring her pretend food and feed her. Avery just can't enough Mick-Tey (as she calls it) and Minnie!

Dinner with Friends and a Valentine's Party

Avery had a busy weekend seeing lots of her friends. On Friday, we went to dinner at Jaime and Kenny's house. Avery got to play with Brooke and Camden. The kids had fun sitting at their own table and Avery loved all of Brooke's toys - especially her baby carriage, motorcycle, and drum set. And then pretty much anything Camden or Brooke played with she decided she loved and needed right then.

On Saturday we went to Henry and Holden's house where Leah hosted a great Valentine's Day Party for the kids. There were lots of yummy snacks (Avery LOVED the strawberry cupcakes the most and also had plenty of the strawberry themed snack mix). Avery tried to make a Valentine for Dad but was pretty distracted by the cupcakes. The kids had fun playing with all the toys while the moms got to visit with each other. We tried to do some posed shots and got a few cute ones - although the kids were pretty wiggly and easily distracted. It was a great party and a fun way to spend our Saturday.

Hung and I are very thankful to have met so many great friends in Indy!
